“The true end of art is not to imitate a fixed material condition, but to represent a living emotion.”

Stories of light, atmosphere & place
My paintings offer a dramatic, color-saturated interpretation of the South Carolina Lowcountry, with a focus on its extraordinary skies and ever-changing atmosphere. Drawn to the meeting of land, water, and sky, I seek to capture the fleeting moments that give this land its profound sense of place.
While rooted in the Lowcountry, my work is less about a specific location than about conveying the emotional experience of place. Whether painting a storm over the marsh, sun breaking through dark clouds, spartina grass alight with unexpected color, or a wood stork emerging from the fog, I strive to create images that evoke memory and emotion.
My background as a journalist and editor shapes my artistic approach. Like a photojournalist, I use close observation and visual storytelling, seeking details and moments that make a scene memorable. I approach my wildlife paintings the same way: birds are not simply subjects to be rendered, but living presences integral to the larger landscape.
I have studied with respected artists in Maine, the Carolinas, and at the Providence Art Club, one of the nation's oldest arts organizations. My work has been exhibited at the Providence Art Club and at galleries in Beaufort, Spring Island, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. I am a juried exhibiting artist with Oil Painters of America, the Beaufort Art Association, and the Art League of Hilton Head. I also teach oil painting on Spring Island.
I hold a B.S. in Journalism from Middle Tennessee State University and, under a pen name, am a published novelist.
Whether writing or painting, I seek moments when landscape, atmosphere, and wildlife come together to tell the stories of this remarkable land.
