Stories told through light and atmosphere
My paintings in oil and pastel are inspired by the Lowcountry's extraordinary light and ever-changing atmosphere. Drawn to the meeting of sky, land, and water, I seek to capture the fleeting moments that give this land its profound sense of place. Through careful observation and expressive use of color, my paintings invite viewers to reconnect with the natural world.
While rooted in the Lowcountry, my work is less about a specific location than about conveying the emotional experience of place. Whether painting a marsh before a storm or a wood stork emerging from the fog, I strive to create images that evoke memory and emotion.
My background as a journalist and editor shapes my artistic approach. Like a photojournalist, I am drawn to quiet stories revealed in ordinary moments. Each painting begins with observation, but aims for something deeper — capturing not simply what I see, but what I feel.
I have studied with respected artists in Maine, the Carolinas, and at the Providence Art Club, one of the nation's oldest arts organizations. My work has been exhibited at the Providence Art Club and at galleries in Beaufort, Spring Island, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. I am a juried exhibiting artist with Oil Painters of America, the Beaufort Art Association, and the Art League of Hilton Head. I also teach oil painting on Spring Island.
I hold a B.S. in Journalism from Middle Tennessee State University and, under a pen name, am a published novelist.
Whether writing or painting, I seek moments when landscape, atmosphere, and wildlife come together to tell the stories of this remarkable land.
