Stories told through mood, light, and atmosphere
My artwork in oil and pastel is inspired by the Lowcountry's unique beauty and deep sense of place. Drawn to the meeting of sky, land, and water, I seek to capture the mood, light, and atmosphere that define this remarkable land. Through bold color, careful observation, and profound love of nature, my paintings invite viewers to reconnect with the natural world.
While rooted in the Lowcountry, my work is less about a specific location than about conveying the emotional experience of place. Whether painting a marsh at dusk or wildlife disappearing into fog, I strive to create images that evoke memory and emotion.
My background as a journalist and editor shapes my artistic approach. Like a photojournalist, I am drawn to fleeting moments and the stories they tell. Each painting starts with observation, but aims for something deeper — capturing and conveying a feeling.
I studied with noted artists in Maine, the Carolinas, and at the Providence Art Club, one of the nation's oldest arts organizations. My work has been exhibited at the Providence Art Club and at galleries in Beaufort, Spring Island, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. I am an exhibiting artist with the Beaufort Art Association and the Art League of Hilton Head. I also teach oil painting on Spring Island.
I hold a B.S. in Journalism from Middle Tennessee State University and, under a pen name, am a published novelist.
Writing and painting reflect the same enduring passion: telling stories and preserving moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
